Parents of teens, here’s what you really need to know about MDMA

Dec 6, 2019

Last week, The Conversation, an independent publication authored by academics and researchers published an article titled “Parents of teens, here’s what you really need to know about MDMA” in response to a recent mass media campaign on the drug.

The authors suggest some of the content delivered in the campaign ignores evidence based best practice approaches in drug education.  They suggest the publication overstates the likelihood of problems occurring from MDMA and fear this will create panic in parents.

In response, their article proposes a more balanced view of the problem and cites evidence that scare tactics and “just say no” campaigns don’t work in reducing drug use in young people.  Alternatively, they suggest harm reduction strategies and that parents keep an open dialogue.
