A review of kava use and supply issues among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

May 10, 2019

The Australian Indigenous Alcohol and Other Drugs Knowledge Centre (The Knowledge Centre) has published a new review of kava use and supply issues among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The review provides general information about kava, including the health effects and the prevalence of kava use by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia, as well as harm reduction strategies.

The Knowledge Centre have developed two resources, including a factsheet and information video to support workers in understanding and addressing kava use with clients.  The resources look at the following:

  • What is kava and how do people use it?
  • What are the effects?
  • The health impacts of kava use.
  • The social impacts of kava use.
  • Kava regulation in Australia.
  • What works to reduce kava use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
