Lost, not forgotten: Inquiry into children who died by suicide and were known to child protection

Nov 22, 2019

The Victorian Commission for Children and Young People has published a report titled “Lost, not forgotten: Inquiry into children who died by suicide and were known to Child Protection.”  The report considers in detail the circumstances that led to the suicides of 35 children who died through suicide from 2007 to 2019, and considers the service system responses to these children. Common themes across these deaths include backgrounds of significant trauma, which in many cases manifested as challenging behaviour in adolescence. Some of these children were seen as a “problem”, with descriptions including “difficult”, “needy”, “angry” and “bad.” The report includes a range of recommendations that are no doubt relevant in the Queensland context.
