Ten emerging drug trends in 2019
Nov 29, 2019
Amy Peacock from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) has published a blog article titled “Ten emerging drug trends in 2019.” The article uses information from the 2019 Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS) and the Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS). These two studies involve interviews with people who regularly use substances from across Australia, focusing on changes in price, purity and availability. Some of the notable trends include a clear increase in recent use of cocaine in the EDRS sample with 36% of respondents reporting recent cocaine use in 2013, rising to 67% in 2019. There has also been an increase in the recent use of ketamine with 15% of the sample reporting recent use in 2015, rising to 41% in 2019.
