Last week The Conversation published an article titled, “Here’s what happened when codeine was made prescription only. No, the sky didn’t fall in”. The article outlines the history of codeine use in Australia and changes to scheduling in February 2018, which meant that people could only access codeine with a prescription. Many feared that this change could lead to increased harm if people switched to using other opioids, however within new research has been published which shows there was a 50% decrease in codeine overdose, with no increase in overdoses from people switching to stronger opioids or higher strength prescription codeine.
