
Australia’s annual overdose report 2019

The Penington Institute have published “Australia’s Annual Overdose Report 2019”. The report attempts to collate data on unintentional drug induced deaths, where the death is directly attributable to drug use. The report found that opioids (particularly pharmaceutical opioids) make up the bulk of the 1612 drug induced deaths identified. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has a significantly higher rate of fatal overdose than non-Indigenous people, with 19.2 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people per 100 000, compared with 6.2 deaths per 100 000 for non-Indigenous people.
