Youth justice, Maori style
Jan 24, 2020
Radio National’s “The Law Report” recently broadcast an episode titled “Youth justice, Maori style.” The episode looks at what goes on in a Rangatahi - one of the Maori Youth Courts of New Zealand. The reporter sits in on a case, and interviews the Maori elders, the police prosecutor, lawyers and two young people who are facing the court. The process relies on melding traditional cultural practices with the contemporary justice system, and aims to reduce recidivism and improve outcomes for young people who might be at risk of continuing to commit offences.
