The Family Matters Report 2020
Nov 27, 2020
“Family Matters: Strong Communities. Strong Culture. Stronger Children '' is Australia’s national campaign aimed at eliminating the overrepresentation of Aborignial and Torres Strait Islander children in out of home care. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governed group recently released “The Family Matters Report 2020.”
The report found that in 2019, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were 9.7 times more likely to be living in out of home care than non-indigenous children, a figure which has sadly been increasing over the last 10 years. A key recommendation from the report is to develop a comprehensive national strategy that is aligned with the “Closing the Gap” target of reducing the over-representation by 45% by 2031. The strategy aims to address the causes of child removal and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to grow up safe and cared for in family, community and culture.
