Mission Australia National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth report: youth survey 2019

Oct 2, 2020

Mission Australia released their annual, “National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth report: youth survey 2019”.  The report analyses findings from the Mission Australia Youth Survey 2019, highlighting key differences between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people compared to their non-Indigenous peers.  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people were more likely than their non-Indigenous peers to highly value culture, and very high numbers of young people were involved in community activities like sports, volunteer work and arts / cultural / music activities.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people reported being three times more likely than their non-Indigenous peers to have experienced homelessness (living with no fixed address, lived in a refuge or within transitional accommodation) at some point in their lives. The report ends with eight key policy recommendations including that Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people need to be at the centre of service design and development, among others.
