Australia’s Annual Overdose Report 2020

Sep 4, 2020

The Penington Institute has published the annual “Australia’s Annual Overdose Report 2020.” The report collates data from the 2018 calendar year, and found there were 2070 drug-induced deaths in that year, of which 1556 were unintentional. Opioids made up the majority of of these overdoses, with 900 cases where opioids contributed, followed by benzodiazepines like Valium contributing to 684 deaths. The rate of unintentional drug-induced death was higher in regional areas when compared with capital cities. People aged over 50 made up 40.6% of those who died, with people aged under 30 making up 9.6%.
