Designer Benzodiazepines in Queensland: What’s in fake Xanax - past webinar by Insight with Karen Blakey, Andrew Griffiths and Mark Daglish

Sep 25, 2020

Recently Dovetail has been getting many calls in relation to young people using benzodiazepines - particularly alprazolam (Xanax) that is very likely counterfeit. Back in July, Insight hosted a webinar by Karen Blakey and Andrew Griffiths from Queensland Forensic and Scientific Services, and Dr Mark Daglsih from the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital titled “Designer Benzodiazepines in Queensland: What’s in fake Xanax?”.

The webinar goes through the range of counterfeit pharmaceutical benzodiazepines which are being detected in Queensland at the moment, and includes some information on the characteristics of these novel substances. Benzodiazepine dependence and withdrawal can require medical intervention. It’s important for youth workers to be aware of this increasing issue that we are seeing across Queensland.
