Why they’re really vaping… Could genes play a role in both smoking and e-cigarette use?

Apr 2, 2021

Researchers from the UK recently published an interesting and very topical paper titled  “Association of genetic liability to smoking initiation with e-cigarette use in young adults: A cohort study”.  Existing research tells us some young people are more likely to smoke cigarettes due to genetics - particularly those genes associated with risk-taking behaviour. However it’s so far been unknown whether there is a similar connection with e-cigarette use.

The findings of this research report suggest that there is a common genetic link associated with both cigarette smoking and the use of e-cigarettes. This indicates that there could be a could be a common underlying genetic link to risk-taking behaviour more broadly.
