At Dovetail we get lots of queries about school-based AOD prevention. Positive Choices is the go-to website with accurate, up-to-date evidence based AOD education resources. They have recently released three new factsheets which explain why AOD prevention in schools is important, what works and what doesn’t, and guidance on choosing resources fit for your needs.

AOD prevention ranges from universal education to more targeted responses for those with increased risk factors. Evidence suggests providing accurate information on AOD in age and developmentally appropriate ways, social influence and/or skills development (e.g. problem solving) and interactive teaching methods are some of the components of effective prevention programs. The factsheets have links to a number of recommended multi-component programs that have been shown to reduce AOD use amongst young people.
