Nicotine vape liquid to be made prescription only in Australia

Jan 19, 2021

The Therapeutic Goods Administration announced at the end of 2020 that commencing 1st of October 2021, nicotine liquid designed for vaping will require a doctor’s prescription. This change means that the current “special access” provisions that allowed adults to import a 3 month supply of nicotine liquid will end. There is clear evidence that vaping nicotine is a more effective pathway to quitting tobacco smoking than traditional nicotine replacement therapy, and so it is important to allow access to liquid nicotine for vaping in order to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco smoking.  Further consultation will occur during 2021 to develop safety and quality standards for nicotine liquids.
