
Deaths of Children and Young People, Queensland 2019-20

The Queensland Family and Child Commission has released their annual “Deaths of Children and Young People, Queensland 2019-20”. This report collates information on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of any child aged under 18 in Queensland, in order to prevent future deaths. In 2019-20 there was 378 deaths, with the majority being via natural causes. Where there were external causes identified, transport incidents were most common (6% of deaths), followed by drowning (3%). Sadly, the report identified 20 children and young people who took their life. About 14% of deaths occurred in children and young people who were known to the Department of Child Safety.
