Participatory action research approaches with young people who use substances

May 28, 2021

We recently came across an article that described a research approach which can be really useful for young people who use drugs.  The article is titled “How the US-Mexico border influences adolescent substance use: Youth participatory action research using photovoice.”  Participatory action research is a research methodology that is centered around the participation of members of the communities affected by the research in the design and implementation of the research. In this research project, the young people employed a photovoice strategy - where they take photos of their environment and surroundings, as a way of documenting their experiences. This paper provides a great example of how the approach can be used to get an insight into the lives and experiences of people that are otherwise marginalised and excluded both in society and in mainstream research.
