Stigma towards people bereaved by drug-related death

May 21, 2021

An article has been published in the journal “Addiction Research & Theory” titled “‘Nothing to mourn, he was just a drug addict’ - stigma towards people bereaved by drug-related death.”  The article describes a research project which included input from 255 parents, siblings, children, partners, and other family members or friends of someone who had passed away from a drug-related cause. Nearly half the participants reported experiencing derogatory remarks from close / extended family and friends, work colleagues, neighbours, media / social media and professionals. This article shines a light on the impact of stigma around alcohol and other drug use, in this case being directed towards people who are bereaved.
