Dovetail Webinar Recording: “‘But it’s the least of their problems’” Barriers to smoking cessation in young people aged under 18”
Nov 26, 2021
In 2020 we conducted a qualitative research project asking clinicians across Queensland about the barriers they are experiencing when supporting young people under 18 who are dependent on tobacco. Dovetail’s own Bec Mounsey recently presented our research findings via the Insight/APSAD webinar series.
We found that barriers existed in relation to young people themselves (internal factors like motivation, coping strategies etc) and then from the wider environment around the young persons (external factors like family, community and service system barriers). This included that currently available treatments for smoking (behavioural interventions and nicotine replacement therapy) are often adult centric. These interventions are cessation based, and in practice, don’t meet the needs of young people who workers frequently reported were not ready to quit. We highlight the need for youth specific treatment interventions including interventions that have a goal of harm reduction.
A big shout out and thank you to the 12 clinicians from across Queensland who participated in this study!
