Racism, racial discrimination and child youth health

Sep 2, 2021

The Victorian Health Department have published a research report titled “Racism, racial discrimination and child and youth health.” The report looks at data collected from 2016 - 2020, which shows high prevalence of racial discriminiation experienced by children and young people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds and from some people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The article goes on to describe anti-racism approaches that could assist with reducing this, including strategies to address systemic / institutional racism, interpersonal racism and internalised racism. Racism can have direct impacts on people’s health, and given racist attitudes, beliefs and behaviours are established in childhood, this is a significant issue that we should consider in whatever field of practice we might work in.
