What happens to youth cannabis use after legalization?

Sep 17, 2021

There are now several states in the United States that have legalized cannabis use. But what happens to the rates of youth cannabis use after legalization? A research report has been recently published that answers this question. The report titled “Association of Marijuana Legalization With Marijuana Use Among US High School Students, 1993-2019” was recently published in the JAMA Network Open.

The report uses data from the Youth Risk Behaviour Survey between 1993-2017 to look at rates of cannabis use before and after the introduction of legalized recreational or medical cannabis use. The authors found that there was no evidence that legalized cannabis led to increases in youth cannabis use.

As more post-legalisation data becomes available, researchers will be able to draw firmer conclusions about the relationship between this legislation and marijuana use amongst adolescents.
