NDARC Webinar: Is vaping nicotine safer than smoking? Presented by Dr Colin Mendelsohn
Jan 21, 2022
The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) is hosting a webinar Thursday 17 February from 2pm - 3pm (Queensland time) titled “Is vaping nicotine safer than smoking?” presented by Dr Colin Mendelsohn.
For adult smokers who are unable to quit, vaping nicotine is highly likely to be a safer alternative to tobacco smoking. While the long-term effects of vaping are unknown, early evidence suggests that it is highly likely that adult smokers who switch to vaping will experience reduced harms. Smokers who switch to vaping are exposed to far fewer toxins in much lower doses and report significant health improvements. For example people with asthma or COPD who switch from smoking to vaping report a reduction in respiratory symptoms. This presentation looks at comparisons between tobacco smoking harms and those related to vaping.
Dr Colin Mendelsohn specialises in tobacco treatment helping smokers quit. He is a member of the expert advisory group that develops the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners national smoking cessation guidelines. He is the Founding Chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association, a health promotion charity established to raise awareness of tobacco harm reduction options.
Dr Mendelsohn is currently an investigator on a National Health and Medical Research Council-funded clinical trial on vaping at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, University of New South Wales, Sydney.
