United Nations World Drug Report 2020

Jul 8, 2022

The United Nations recently released the annual “World Drug Report 2022.” The report looks at a range of domains including trends in drug use and harm, global drug production and trafficking trends, socioeconomic factors and international drug policy issues. Given the global nature of the illicit drug trade, the “World Drug Report 2022” provides some perspective on the scale of the issue.

Despite more than 50 years of global prohibition, illegal drugs continue to generate massive profits for organised crime, destabilising entire countries and regions. There has been record growth in production of cocaine, which has led to declines in the price around the world, including in Australia. Methamphetamine production continues to grow in both scale and distribution, while cannabis remained the most commonly used illegal drug globally.
