Trends in alcohol consumption in relation to the covid-19 pandemic

Mar 11, 2022

A research article has been published titled “Trends in alcohol consumption in relation to the covid-19 pandemic: A cross-country analysis.” The article looks at alcohol consumption data from a number of countries including the United States, Mexico, France, the United Kingdom and Australia. The pandemic saw a range of changes in patterns of substance use. While there were increases in alcohol consumption noted particularly in older age groups in Australia, this was somewhat offset by declines in alcohol consumption by young people - whose drinking probably declined due to the closure of licensed premises. This article shows the diversity of changes across the world. Some of the common trends noted includes the increase in online purchasing of alcohol and the related increase in drinking in the home environment.
