Journal article: A systematic review of qualitative studies exploring lived experiences, perceived impact, and coping strategies of children and young people whose parents use substances

Nov 25, 2022

An article was recently published in the “Trauma, Violence, & Abuse” journal titled, “A systematic review of qualitative studies exploring lived experiences, perceived impact, and coping strategies of children and young people whose parents use substances. This paper reviewed 35 studies across 49 papers, with a focus on high-risk patterns of substance use that is likely to cause harm to children and young people.

The findings emphasise that children and young people who experience problematic parental substance use often have little formal support in place, and instead are trying to manage and mitigate vulnerabilities and be resilient to unpredictable, adverse, and often stigmatising experiences. Further research is needed to coproduce child-centred interventions that promote children and young people’s social and emotional resilience.
