An article was published in “The Conversation” titled ‘Should I give my teen alcohol? Just a sip, the whole can or none at all?”. The article gives a summary of a research study that followed a group of young Australians from age 13 through to age 19, looking at their parents' attitudes to alcohol and then subsequent alcohol use in the young people. The research found that young people who were either not supplied alcohol at all or only supplied minimal amounts of alcohol had the lowest risk of binge drinking, alcohol harm or symptoms of alcohol use disorder. Young people who were supplied alcohol at a younger age (age 14-16) or those young people who had alcohol supplied by their peers had the highest levels of later alcohol use and related harm. Those in between - who were given sips of alcohol from parents from age 14-16 had mid-range risks of alcohol harm.
