New ADF Fact Sheet on Nitazenes
Aug 4, 2023
The Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) have released a fact sheet on nitazenes, a family of synthetic opioids. As the illicit drug market evolves, new drugs continue to emerge. Nitazenes have most often been sold as other drugs, recently being detected in samples of counterfeit Xanax in Queensland, but also in samples of counterfeit oxycodone in the ACT, and in heroin found in Sydney. We are likely to continue to see new synthetic opioids like nitazenes appear on the market, and it’s important that workers stay up to date. Nitazenes act just like other opioids – causing respiratory depression, which can be reversed with drugs like naloxone.
