An article has been published in the journal "Drug and Alcohol Review" titled "Real or fake? Sourcing and marketing of non-prescribed benzodiazepines amongst two samples of people who regularly use illicit drugs in Australia." The study uses data from the Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS), and the Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS) to better understand how non-prescribed benzodiazepines are sourced, their appearance, and associated risks. Findings indicate that many obtain these substances through diverted prescriptions, with a significant number unaware of the existence of counterfeit tablets. Recent tightening of prescription regulations might have unintentionally led to an increase in the supply of novel benzodiazepines – particularly those commonly found in counterfeit Xanax.
