Review of alcohol and drug treatment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Feb 3, 2023

The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet Alcohol and other Drugs Knowledge Centre is a national web resource that provides relevant and culturally appropriate content and resources for health practitioners and community members working to reduce harms from AOD use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. They have recently published a “Review of alcohol and drug treatment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.” The review looks at the research evidence around treatment approaches for problematic alcohol and other drug use, but also grey literature – reports that may not be peer reviewed, but may have been part of evaluations or reviews of existing programs. The article describes some of the key principles of providing culturally secure alcohol and other drug treatment, including the ways that mainstream services can adapt the processes to improve cultural security.
