The rise of dark advertising: gambling, alcohol, junk food ads bombarding people in Australia
Jan 27, 2023
The Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) has published an article on their website titled “The rise of dark advertising: gambling, alcohol, junk food ads bombarding people in Australia.” The term dark advertising refers to targeted online advertising – usually targeted a narrow demographics, and only viewable to those people. This means that the public, researchers, and policy makers aren’t able to see the types of ads being targeted at specific groups in the population. In order to illustrate the issue, the article describes two examples from young people aged in their 20s, who monitored their Facebook, Instagram and YouTube feeds and tracked the ads being targeted towards them. In one case, 24 unhealthy product ads were delivered over a three-day period, while in another case 17 unhealthy product ads were delivered in the three day period.
