Alcohol and other drug treatment services in Australia annual report 2021-22
Jun 23, 2023
Fresh off the press: the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) recently published the annual "Alcohol and other drug treatment services in Australia annual report 2021-22" which includes data from alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services in Australia. It contains useful information, findings, and trends about publicly funded AOD treatment agencies, client demographics, drugs of concern and treatment types.
In 2021-22, 34,564 people in Queensland received AOD treatment. Of these, 13.4% were aged between 10-19 years old whereas those aged between 20-39 made up around half of all people accessing AOD treatment.
Alcohol remains the primary drug of concern for those accessing AOD treatment in Queensland at 39%, followed by cannabis at 24%, and amphetamines at 22%. Of the clients receiving treatment for amphetamines, 90% reported methamphetamine as the principal drug of concern with injection being the most common method of use. The high level of cannabis reported is a result of police and illicit drug court diversion programs.
