Jun 9, 2023
The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) have recently published a study titled “Characteristics and circumstances of volatile solvent misuse-related death in Australia, 2000-2021”. In this study, 164 cases, predominantly males aged between 15 and 64 years, were reviewed. While the average age of volatile substance misuse-related death was in the mid-twenties, which is consistent with previous reports, a substantial proportion occurred amongst people aged 40 years or older. The report found the most frequent cause of death was unintentional toxicity (61%). The most frequently used volatile solvent at the fatal incident was gas fuels (35.4%).
