Jun 30, 2023
An article has been published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology titled “The New Zealand drug harms ranking study: A multi-criteria decision analysis.” This article builds upon a similar Australian and UK studies that have sought to rank drugs in order of most harmful to least harmful by considering harm to the individual and society. This New Zealand paper is unique in that it includes a harm ranking aimed at the specific needs of young people. In this ranking, the authors found alcohol to be the most harmful substance, followed by methamphetamine, synthetic cannabinoids, solvents / fuels, and non-prescription opioids. The authors found the least harmful substances included kava, nitrous oxide, and hallucinogens like LSD and magic mushrooms.
