The journal “Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy” recently released an article titled, “The experiences of family members attending an online addiction education program: a qualitative study”. Family members of people experiencing problematic substance use can experience increased stress and struggle to cope, with peer and education-based programs yet to be subject to in-depth research.
The journal article examined the experiences of 21 family members attending an online addiction education program, called “BreakThrough” which was based in Victoria. Qualitative research was conducted to explore the three main themes that emerged from the study: experience of validation, not fixing, stepping back, and education to help make sense of experiences.
The study found that the online program provided a validating and de-stigmatising experience for participants, helping them to shift their approach to coping and consolidate their understanding of addiction. Participants also reported being able to access collective insights from other peers and make sense of their own experiences through education and support.
