If you engage with young people who regularly use substances, you might start to notice patterns or cycles to their use. There might be periods where a young person isn’t using substances. This can be followed by a build-up period where a young person might be planning to use – for example if there’s a party on the weekend. There can be times of acute intoxication, followed by a come down. By understand the cycles of AOD use, we can better plan our responses. In this short video, we describe some of the common cycles and give workers suggestions for the types of strategies you might employ based on where a young person is at.
