Treatment for AOD problems should involve families and communities

An article has been published on The Conversation website titled “Treatment for drug and alcohol misuse should involve families and communities.” The article describes the treatment approach utilised at Pinangba – a residential rehabilitation service on Cape York that is one of the few services in Australia that includes the whole family. Pinangba is an Indigenous-lead service, that uses a systemic family therapy model, where the individual is treated within their family context, but also within broader social, political and historical systems. These types of services remain uncommon in Australia, and a team of researchers are currently evaluating outcomes from Pinangba to see how these holistic treatment approaches work.
