Trends in overdose and other drug-induced deaths in Australia, 2002-2021

May 5, 2023

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) have published the annual “Trends in overdose and other drug-induced deaths in Australia, 2002-2021.” The report shows that from 2002, the rate of drug-induced deaths has steadily increased, peaking in 2017, with a small decrease since then. Opioids were the most identified substance involved in a drug-induced death, making up 58% of deaths. In Queensland, there were 350 drug induced deaths, with the majority of these occurring in major cities and most of these occurring in the home. NDARC have also made a very handy data visualisation tool which allows you to look at specific elements.
